Mike Swanson writes:

Some students are moving ahead with their research quite well.  They've created a bibliography page on their journal and started to fill in information they've been finding.

Of course, whenever I say some, the implication is that some others have been doing a little coasting.  So let's get ourselves beyond the coasting stage as soon as possible.

Mike Swanson Writes some more:

We will be using class time next week to begin student-led discussions of the John Hope Franklin essays as chosen.  I'm happy to report that enough people have volunteered to go that we will have full slates for both Monday and Thursday next.

  • On Monday the 16th, Andrew and Brian will lead a discussion of Essay 2, Birth of a Nation:  Propaganda as History
  • On Monday the 16th, Max, Scott, and Dan will lead a discussion of Essay 11, Two Worlds of Race: an Historical View.

  • On Thursday, the 19th, Stephen will lead a discussion of Essay 8, Slavery and the Martial South.
  • On Thursday the 19th, Dana and Michelle will lead a discussion of Essay 10:  The Enforcement of the Civil Rights Act of 1875

As soon as the discussion leaders send me discussion questions or other materials they wish you to consider, I'll post it for them.
  Tom Bushell Writes:
I've done a little research on the Tuskegee Airmen in the past and found it all pretty interesting, so I'd definitely be willing to make the Air Force my primary focus, to which I replied, The Tuskeegee Airmen are yours, Tom. if you still want them.  I'll announce this on the class website now to stake your turf out.

Mike Swanson Writes:

Since Monday's little sermonette, the following students have started bibliographies:
  • Dana Di Santo
  • Heather Gullberg.  (Bravo, Heather--you're joining Brittany in the Galaxy of Stars)
  • Brittany Pacheco has updated hers adding more great stuff, and she's also put up something which may have useful material for those of you working on some aspect of the depression years.  This is a good reason to check others' journals from time to time.  I added a link as a comment, which she might find useful, because I want to be a good citizen, too.

I had hoped that some more students would have become stars (sigh).  Oh well, maybe over the weekend.
